A source close to the coordination framework confirmed on Monday that the process of selecting the next prime minister is proceeding normally and according to the mechanisms agreed upon within the framework, indicating that what is being circulated in some media outlets does not reflect the reality of the internal discussions and is mostly aimed at stirring controversy.

The source, who asked not to be named, told Al-Maalomah that “the dialogues within the coordination framework are proceeding smoothly without any significant complications, while many media platforms rely on inaccurate information that has no relation to what is actually happening inside the meetings.”

He explained that “the mechanism adopted within the framework grants the right to run for the position of Prime Minister to the forces that have more than 25 seats, which applies to three blocs: Reconstruction and Development, the State of Law Coalition, and the Sadiqun bloc headed by Sheikh Qais al-Khazali,” noting that the latter “apologized for entering the competition, so the competition remains limited to Nouri al-Maliki and Muhammad Shia al-Sudani.”

The source added that “al-Sudani was excluded from the nomination race due to the mistakes that occurred during his time as prime minister, leaving him with two options: to nominate a replacement from within his bloc, or to leave the field open to the State of Law Coalition candidate, Nouri al-Maliki.”
