Member of Parliament Yasser Iskandar called on Friday for a public session of Parliament to discuss the Khor Abdullah issue, stressing that the creek represents a purely Iraqi geography that cannot be relinquished.
“Khawr Abdullah is a strategic waterway of utmost importance to Iraq’s ports in Basra Governorate, and Baghdad’s rights in this vital area cannot be overlooked,” Iskandar told Al-Maalouma. He noted that “the issue must be discussed transparently before the public in a public session.”
He added, “Holding the session will clarify the state’s future vision on this issue and give representatives from various forces and blocs an opportunity to publicly and clearly state their positions.”
Iskandar stressed that “Khawr Abdullah is geographically and historically an integral part of Iraqi sovereignty, and the House of Representatives is required to take a clear national and historical position that reflects the popular will on this issue.”
It is noteworthy that the Khor Abdullah issue has sparked widespread controversy in recent months, amid growing parliamentary and popular calls for serious action to establish Iraqi rights to this region overlooking the Arabian Gulf.
