Dhi Qar Provincial Council member Ahmed Al-Khafaji confirmed on Sunday that a proposal has been put forward to desalinate Euphrates water to address the severe shortage of drinking water in several areas of the province.
Al-Khafaji told Al-Maalouma, “Water desalination technology has proven its worth in many countries around the world, having addressed the salinity issue and contributed to providing potable water according to clear and consistent indicators.” He explained that he had proposed implementing this technology in Dhi Qar to secure drinking water for areas currently suffering from a severe shortage.
He added, “Dhi Qar is one of the most prominent governorates facing a severe water crisis, and therefore, the Euphrates River can be used through desalination to address this crisis.”
It is noteworthy that the Middle and Southern Euphrates governorates have been suffering for years from water scarcity and high salinity levels in streams and rivers, which poses a threat to public health and the environment.
