Member of the Parliamentary Finance Committee, MP Mudhar Al-Karwi, confirmed on Wednesday that the 2025 budget tables will reach the committee within the next two weeks.
Al-Karwi told Al-Maalomah, “The 2025 budget tables have indeed been delayed, and were expected to arrive after the end of the Eid al-Fitr holiday, but they did not. However, the indicators we have indicate that they will arrive within the next two weeks, and therefore they will be discussed by the Finance Committee in detail, taking all visions and proposals into account in order to make amendments before putting them to a vote.”
Al-Karwi added, “There is a close follow-up of this file by the Parliamentary Finance Committee, and communication with the Council of Ministers to expedite the referral of the budget tables to the Finance Committee to resolve the audit file and reach a vote.”
He pointed out that “voting on the budget tables is important in terms of ensuring the entitlements of ministries and agencies and proceeding with the financing of projects at their various stages, in addition to ensuring control of entitlements for some segments, but it is not possible to confirm now what the tables contain until they are received by the Finance Committee.”
It is noteworthy that the 2025 budget tables were supposed to arrive before the end of the first quarter of 2025, but they were delayed, and therefore there were repeated parliamentary calls for the need to expedite the pace of sending them from the Council of Ministers to the Parliamentary Finance Committee for scrutiny before referring them to a vote.
It is noteworthy that economic expert Faleh Al-Zubaidi warned, on Wednesday, that the Iraqi general budget for 2025 could be “catastrophic” due to the large financial deficit resulting from the decline in oil prices, which could threaten investment activity in the country.
