On Monday, MP Miqdad al-Khafaji, a member of the Rights Bloc in Parliament, stated that his bloc’s position on Prime Minister Ali al-Zubaidi’s visit to Washington hinges on whether it serves the supreme national interest. He emphasized the bloc’s categorical rejection of any external dictates or interference in the country’s internal affairs. Al-Khafaji told the Information Agency, “The visit of the Prime Minister, or any executive official, to Washington must contribute to strengthening bilateral relations and concluding balanced agreements that achieve equal mutual benefit for both countries.”
He added, “The results of this visit must not come at the expense of Iraq’s supreme interests or involve concessions that serve only the American side.” He affirmed the bloc’s “categorical rejection of discussing the issues of restricting weapons to the state and the Popular Mobilization Forces in Washington, as these are sovereign internal matters that must be decided exclusively within the Iraqi Parliament, which is the legitimate representative of the popular will.”
It is reported that Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi departed this morning for Washington, D.C., accompanied by a government and parliamentary delegation and a number of government officials, including the Minister of Finance and the Governor of the Central Bank. The visit will last for one week, according to the Prime Minister’s Media Office.
