Veteran financial analyst and prominent Wall Street investor Peter Tanos asserted on Tuesday that the ongoing war between the United States and Iran will have broad implications for the global economic environment, while also suggesting that the conflict is unlikely to last long.
Tanos told Shafaq News Agency that the current war “is changing everything in the economic environment,” predicting that oil prices will remain high until a political settlement is reached.
He explained that the US financial system is capable of withstanding the current pressures, indicating that its resilience allows it to deal with the repercussions of the war without a real threat to financial stability.
Tanos pointed out that the US Federal Reserve is facing a complex economic dilemma, given the decline in job data on the one hand and the rising risks of inflation due to the war on the other.
He explained that lowering interest rates to stimulate the economy could lead to increased inflationary pressures, suggesting that the Federal Reserve is likely to keep interest rates unchanged for the time being.
Regarding precious metals markets, Thanos said that gold will continue to play its traditional role as a safe haven in times of uncertainty, but he warned against exaggerating expectations of a rise.
He added that prices have seen significant jumps over the past year, which means that gold’s ability to make further substantial gains may be limited.
Regarding the status of the US currency, Thanos affirmed that the US dollar will remain the most important reserve currency in the world, noting that it will remain a safe haven in times of geopolitical crisis.
He explained that the dollar may face competition in the future, but it will remain the first choice in global trade.
In assessing the course of the conflict, Thanos predicted that the war would end within a short period, explaining that the duration might not exceed two additional weeks.
He added: “The United States and Israel have complete air superiority over Iran and can target any location, which makes Tehran’s ability to withstand this pressure time-limited.”
Thanos concluded by saying that initiatives to end the war may emerge within about a week, given the escalating military and economic pressures.
