Shafaq News/ The Arab foreign ministers’ preparatory meeting for the Arab League summit, held Thursday in Baghdad, addressed a number of topics to be discussed at the Arab summit scheduled for next Saturday.
During the meeting, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein proposed forming an open-ended Arab higher ministerial committee to bring viewpoints closer, unify positions, and resolve differences.
Hussein emphasized the importance of dialogue to preserve security in the Arab region, welcoming Oman’s efforts to reach a peace agreement in Yemen. He noted that the Palestinian issue remains our central concern, and that we renew our support for the Palestinian people in liberating their land and establishing their state with Jerusalem as its capital.
For his part, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit stated during the meeting that the Baghdad Summit, scheduled for Saturday, the day after tomorrow, marks a significant historical moment and harbors great hopes.
Aboul Gheit expressed his hope that the summit would produce a unified message calling for an immediate end to the war of extermination against the Palestinian people, adding, “Our message and vision for our shared issues must be unified to strengthen Arab national security in its comprehensive sense.”
In this regard, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Bahrain, Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayyan, said: “We hope that the summit will produce decisions that strengthen the path of joint Arab action and achieve our shared aspirations and goals.”
He added, “We seek to strengthen Arab cooperation and intensify joint coordination efforts to confront challenges and establish sustainable peace,” stressing “the centrality of the Palestinian cause, the rejection of the displacement of Palestinians from their land, and the protection of their legitimate rights.”
Iraqi Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Hisham Al-Alawi told Shafaq News Agency on Thursday that the level of attendance at the Arab Summit scheduled to be held in Baghdad is “good” and no less than the level of participation at the previous summit hosted by Bahrain.
Al-Alawi said that “the attendance of Arab presidents and leaders at the summit will be more than half,” noting that “among the most prominent participants are the Egyptian president, the King of Jordan, the King of Bahrain, the Palestinian president, and the Yemeni president, in addition to presidents from other Arab countries.”
Al-Alawi added that “the Syrian delegation will be headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs,” explaining that “the level of attendance and public representation is good and will contribute to the issuance of decisions and recommendations that serve the Arab world.”
Earlier, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani indicated that surprises were expected at the Arab Summit hosted by Baghdad, revealing that Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara had decided to represent his country through Foreign Minister Ahmed al-Shaibani.
Al-Sudani stated that “the level of attendance so far is acceptable and customary at Arab summits,” expressing his hope that “there will be attendance at higher levels and in larger numbers, commensurate with the scale of the events and the aspirations of the Arab people.”
The Iraqi capital, Baghdad, is preparing to host the Arab Summit next Saturday, May 17, 2025. This comes as part of Iraq’s efforts to strengthen its regional diplomatic presence, at a time when the region is facing political, security, and economic challenges.
