The Kremlin announced on Wednesday a possible trilateral meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin, his American counterpart Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, to be held in November.
The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum is scheduled to hold its summit in Shenzhen, China, on November 18 and 19.
The Kremlin indicated that Putin would participate in the summit, while the White House has not yet announced whether Trump will attend.
When asked whether Trump and Putin discussed the idea of a trilateral meeting in Shenzhen during their phone call on Tuesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “Undoubtedly.”
Peskov told reporters, including journalists from Agence France-Presse, that “this possibility has already been raised, and there will be an opportunity to hold such a meeting.”
The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum was established in the 1980s and includes several countries, including Russia, China and the United States. It is one of the most prominent frameworks for economic cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region.
The November summit comes amid US pressure on Russia to end the war in Ukraine, while relations between Moscow and Beijing are strengthening.
Two envoys from Trump visited both Moscow and Kyiv last week, but they did not announce any tangible breakthrough on the road to ending the war in Ukraine.
