The UN Security Council failed on Tuesday to pass a draft resolution to secure navigation in the Strait of Hormuz after Russia and China vetoed it.
Bahrain, an elected member of the Council, along with the Gulf states and Jordan, initiated negotiations two weeks ago on a text that would have granted UN authorization to any country wishing to use force to secure navigation in this vital waterway.
The draft resolution encourages countries concerned to “use military force against Iran and coordinate offensive efforts among those countries to ensure the safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, including escorting commercial vessels.”
It demands that Iran “immediately cease all attacks against vessels transiting this vital trade route and any attempt to impede freedom of navigation.”
The draft also indicates that “the Council will be prepared to consider further measures against those who undermine freedom of navigation in the strait.”
