A deputy is likely to extend the legislative term of parliament to approve the budget - the remaining time is not enoughShafaq News/ Member of the Parliamentary Legal Committee, Raed Al-Maliki suggested, on Monday, to extend the legislative term of the House of Representatives in order to approve the tripartite federal budget law.

Al-Maliki told Shafaq News agency, “The remaining days of the current legislative term are not enough to pass the general budget law, and therefore the parliament is obliged to extend the legislative term by one month until the law is approved.”

He added, “The first legislative term for the second legislative year will end on May 9, after which Parliament will enter the legislative recess for a month if the budget law is approved in the coming days.”

The Iraqi Council of Representatives completed the first and second readings of the draft federal budget law for the Republic of Iraq, which was submitted by the government of Muhammad Shia al-Sudani for the fiscal years 2023, 2024, and 2025.

On Tuesday (April 18), the Parliamentary Finance Committee revealed the existence of political disagreements and objections to the draft state budget law, noting that passing it “will not be easy.”
