MP Thaer Makhif held the House of Representatives’ leadership responsible on Thursday for obstructing efforts to question Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani over the delay in sending the draft budget bill to parliament, warning of “dire consequences” if the delay continues.

“The Council of Ministers has been stalling for months on sending detailed budget tables, despite the long time that has passed since its approval as a three-year law, which negatively impacts the implementation of projects and service plans in the governorates,” Makhif told Al-Maalouma News Agency. He pointed out that “there are serious moves by a number of representatives to question the Prime Minister and a number of figures involved in the budget file.”

He added that “the House of Representatives’ presidency stood in the way of these efforts and clearly contributed to their obstruction, which constitutes an encroachment on the legislative authority’s oversight role,” holding it “fully responsible for the political and economic repercussions that may result from the continued delay in implementing budget provisions.”

Makhif affirmed that “the next phase will witness escalating steps within the parliament if the MPs’ demands are not met and those who are negligent in this sensitive matter are not held accountable.”
