The Central Bank of Iraq revealed on Tuesday the value of fines imposed on banks and non-banking institutions, including exchange companies, confirming that they exceeded 126 billion Iraqi dinars during the year 2025.
According to statistics issued by the Central Bank and reviewed by Shafaq News Agency, the total fines imposed on banks and financial companies, for the period from January until the end of December 2025, amounted to 126 billion, 337 million, and 630 thousand dinars.
The statistics indicated that these measures also included imposing 120 administrative penalties on those banks and non-banking institutions, distributed between warnings, notices and grace periods.
She explained that the value of fines recorded during the year 2025 witnessed a decrease compared to the same period of the year 2024, in which fines amounted to 229 billion, 144 million and 976 thousand dinars, while the number of penalties at that time amounted to 238 penalties distributed between warning, admonition and grace period.
The central bank did not name the banks or institutions that were fined or subjected to administrative penalties.
There are currently about 75 banks operating in Iraq, including 24 private commercial banks, 31 Islamic banks, in addition to 17 branches of foreign banks and representative offices.
Iraq leads the Middle East in terms of the number of private banks, while the Central Bank oversees the merger and rehabilitation of a number of them in accordance with international standards.
