Economic expert - The telecommunications tax harms citizens more than it benefits the stateInformation/Baghdad…
Economic researcher Diaa Abdul Karim explained that the tax imposed on telecommunications will raise the prices of prepaid phone cards and internet services, burdening citizens without generating significant revenue for the budget.
Abdul Karim told Al-Maalouma, “Achieving the highest revenues cannot be done at the expense of the citizen, but rather through successful and profitable state projects that serve the citizen and improve their living conditions, such as improving electricity and services and providing modern transportation.”
He added, “Re-imposing taxes on mobile phone recharge cards and internet lines will not offer anything new to the citizen; rather, it will burden them with additional financial obligations. Furthermore, it will not generate substantial revenue to bolster the state budget and alleviate Iraq’s financial crisis.” He pointed out
that “instead of resorting to methods that increase the burden on citizens, the government could focus on exporting petroleum products, developing and increasing the number of refineries, and providing better services for fees that do not strain citizens’ budgets.”
