On Friday, Abdul Sattar Ahmed Al-Dulaimi, a member of the United Anbar Alliance, revealed that Masoud Barzani had informed the Sunni National Council of his rejection of the nomination of Mohammed Al-Halbousi, head of the Progress Party, for the presidency of the House of Representatives.
Al-Dulaimi told Al-Maalouma News Agency that “Masoud Barzani informed the Sunni National Council of the Kurdish parties’ position rejecting the nomination of the head of the Progress Alliance, Muhammad al-Halbousi, for the presidency of the House of Representatives, and the efforts of the former head of the Sovereignty Alliance, Khamis al-Khanjar, to bring the views between Barzani’s party and al-Halbousi have not succeeded.”
He added that “Barzani urged the leaders of the Sunni alliances to use the time to choose an alternative to Halbousi,” emphasizing that most Kurdish parties oppose Halbousi’s re-nomination, arguing that there is no alternative. He explained that “the Sunni National Council informed the coordinating framework of its nomination of two figures: Muthanna al-Samarrai, head of the Azm Alliance, and Halbousi, from whom one will be chosen after the council was unable to nominate a single candidate.”
