Al-Kadhimi: Exporting oil at $60 a barrel will secure employee salaries

The Information Agency / Baghdad –
MP Mu’in al-Kadhimi affirmed on Thursday that continuing to export oil at a rate of three and a half million barrels per day at a price ranging between $60 and $65 per barrel could be sufficient to cover the necessary funds for paying employee salaries. He stressed the need to avoid relying solely on a rentier economy based on oil.
Speaking to the Information Agency, al-Kadhimi said, “The government is required to take concrete steps to increase non-oil revenues by improving the performance of customs and tax authorities, and by activating the role of media and communications, as well as increasing revenue collection from ministries and profitable companies.”
He added that “reducing unnecessary expenditures, curbing administrative inflation, and supporting the private sector and small and medium-sized enterprises will be key to diversifying the national economy and moving beyond its current oil dependency.”
He emphasized the necessity of “capitalizing on the opportunities available within the new government program,” asserting that the government to be formed next year must prioritize the economy and its diversification to overcome the current economic crisis.
He noted that “there was a supportive vision for the government of Mohammed al-Sudani through the three-year budget for the years 2023-2025, which aimed to ensure the continued implementation of government projects and programs,” adding that “the success of this vision was linked to the implementation of the government program presented by al-Sudani.”
