A verbal altercation disrupts the Sunni reconciliation meeting and Halbousi leaves in angerAl-Maalomah/Anbar…
A source in Anbar province revealed on Tuesday that Mohammed al-Halbousi, head of the Progress Alliance, stormed out of a small meeting convened by the Sunni Council to reconcile his differences with Muthanna al-Samarrai, head of the Azm Alliance.
The source told Al-Maalomah News Agency that “a verbal altercation ended the small meeting, which the Sunni Council had called to bridge the gap between Muthanna al-Samarrai and Mohammed al-Halbousi, head of the Azm Alliance, in order to resolve their rivalry and reach a Sunni consensus on nominating one of them for the position of Speaker of Parliament.”
The source added that “Al-Halbousi insisted on nominating himself alone for the position of Speaker of Parliament, while the leaders of the Sunni National Council objected to Al-Halbousi’s approach and insisted on opposing him and maintaining the nomination of Al-Samarrai as an alternative to Al-Halbousi, the most controversial figure in political circles.” The source explained that “the meeting, which was dedicated to formulating a unified agreement, failed miserably due to disagreements and a verbal altercation between Al-Halbousi and Al-Samarrai, which led to Al-Halbousi storming out of the meeting and threatening to withdraw from the Sunni Council.”
The source further explained that “the Sunni Council meeting was ended out of fear that the disagreements between Al-Halbousi and Al-Samarrai would escalate into a complete break and create a rift in the Sunni alliances,” emphasizing that “the disagreements within the Sunni Council arose after Al-Halbousi insisted on nominating himself for Speaker of Parliament.”
