The State of Law coalition rejects the Sudanese Initiative - We remain committed to Nouri al-MalikiShafaq News – Baghdad
On Tuesday, MP Ibtisam Al-Hilali, from the State of Law Coalition, revealed that her coalition rejected the initiative of the Reconstruction and Development Coalition, led by (outgoing) Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, regarding the candidate for the new government, stressing that the leaders of the framework refuse to renew Al-Sudani’s mandate.

Al-Hilali told Shafaq News Agency, “We reject the initiative presented by the Reconstruction and Development Coalition to the Coordination Framework regarding the selection of a prime ministerial candidate,” indicating that “the initiative is a description of Al-Sudani and an attempt by his coalition to obtain a second term.”

She added that “the leaders of the Coordination Framework had previously informed Al-Sudani that his mandate was not renewed for several reasons, the latest of which were incorrect decisions, foreign interference in internal affairs, the deterioration of the economic situation, and the country’s descent into an economic crisis.”

She continued: “We in the State of Law affirm our commitment to nominating Nouri al-Maliki for the position of the next Prime Minister, considering that ‘there is support and endorsement for al-Maliki from the Sunni and Kurdish parties to assume the position.'”

She indicated that “the coordinating framework will decide on its candidate for the position of Prime Minister after the first session of the House of Representatives is held and the Speaker and his two deputies are elected.”

The Reconstruction and Development Coalition, led by outgoing Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, had put forward a political initiative to decide on the selection of the largest bloc’s candidate for the new government. The initiative included adopting consensus within the coordination framework and specific criteria for selecting the candidate, most notably executive experience and national acceptance, while proposing an alternative option based on electoral weights in case consensus could not be reached. This was all part of efforts to end the political deadlock and resolve the issue of the premiership within the constitutional timeframes.
