Al-Maalomah/Anbar –
Abdul Sattar Ahmed al-Dulaimi, a member of the United Anbar Alliance, confirmed on Monday that the Sunni National Council convened and unanimously agreed to support the nomination of Muthanna al-Samarrai, head of the Azm Alliance, for the position of Speaker of Parliament. This came amidst objections from Mohammed al-Halbousi, head of the Taqaddum Alliance, who opposes supporting al-Samarrai because he is not affiliated with his party.
Al-Dulaimi told Al-Maalomah News Agency that “the Sunni National Council meeting, held at the home of Thabit al-Abbasi, head of the Hasam Alliance, failed to reach a consensus on a candidate for Speaker of Parliament after al-Halbousi rejected the council leaders’ agreement to elect al-Samarrai.”
He added that “the Coordination Framework forces and the Kurds informed the Sunni National Council of their rejection of al-Halbousi’s nomination, considering him a controversial figure unwelcome by the other political alliances.”
Al-Dulaimi continued: “The nomination of al-Samarrai for Speaker of Parliament did not face opposition from the leaders of the Shia and Kurdish blocs. However, al-Halbousi objected to assigning the position to someone from outside the Progress Party, considering it an electoral entitlement.” He emphasized that “the coming days will witness a call for Sunni forces to hold an emergency meeting to decide on the position of Speaker of Parliament.”
