A source close to the National Political Council revealed on Monday that Sunni forces sent three messages to Mohammed al-Halbousi, head of the “Progress” Alliance, during a meeting held at the home of Thabit al-Abbasi.
The source told Al-Maalouma that “the meeting of the National Political Council, which represents Sunni forces, at the home of Thabit al-Abbasi, head of the “Decisiveness” Alliance, last night in Baghdad, discussed several issues, most notably sending three messages to Mohammed al-Halbousi.” The source
added that the messages stated that “the current situation does not support your return to the Speakership of Parliament,” while also suggesting “the possibility of choosing another candidate from your bloc or a consensus figure from the “Determination” Alliance.”
The source noted that the messages emphasized “the necessity of lifting any veto against any Sunni force by al-Halbousi, ensuring partnership for all in the next government, and halting the hostile media campaigns.”
According to the source, “leaks indicate that al-Halbousi was concerned about the possibility of losing the Speakership, as he realized that unifying Sunni forces to demand the presidency is extremely difficult and lacks support from other political forces.”
He explained that “losing the position of Speaker of Parliament is extremely difficult for him,” noting that “it was agreed to postpone any decision to a later stage, especially since negotiations and dialogues are still ongoing.”
