The forces of the Coordination Framework will hold a meeting this evening, Monday, at the home of the head of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki, with the aim of agreeing on the identity of the next prime minister and ending the controversy surrounding him.
A source from the Coordination Framework told Shafaq News Agency that “the meeting of the framework’s leaders and chiefs will focus on deciding on the name of the next prime minister through the agreement of the forces on one of the candidates. If that is not possible, a vote will be adopted to choose the most suitable candidate. If a vote is also not possible, a compromise candidate will be chosen.”
The source added that “despite the chances of outgoing Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, it seems difficult due to al-Maliki’s insistence on not renewing his term, and the reservations of some other leaders, which may push everyone to put forward a figure outside the list of candidates amid strong reservations about not revealing his identity.”
The source indicated that “among the other files included on the framework table is the file of restricting weapons to the state and its repercussions and the fate of the factions, and the mechanisms for dealing with the parties or factions that refuse to disarm and restrict weapons to the state in a way that enhances its sovereignty, in addition to other files included in the meeting agenda.”
Today, the Reconstruction and Development Coalition, led by outgoing Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, presented a comprehensive political initiative to resolve the prime ministership issue and end the deadlock.
According to a statement issued by his office, the initiative focuses on national consensus and constitutional entitlement, with its details to be presented to the forces of the Coordination Framework in an “upcoming meeting,” with the aim of forming a stable and effective government that reflects the aspirations of the Iraqi street.
This comes after the Coordination Framework called for a session of the House of Representatives to elect its leadership, and the Federal Court ratified the final election results.
