The Ministry of Electricity confirmed on Friday that it is implementing campaigns to install meters, upgrade distribution networks, and collect energy payments. It also indicated that losses in power transmission lines and distribution networks reach more than 58%. Ministry spokesman Ahmed Moussa told the official news agency that “there are ongoing meetings between Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’a Al-Sudani and Minister of Electricity Ziad Ali Fadhil to oversee the electricity sector’s readiness to meet peak loads, whether winter or summer loads.” He explained that “these meetings focus on the details of load balancing and the care of load centers and central and peripheral areas, in addition to projects to address bottlenecks in the electricity networks, all of which are continuously discussed by the Prime Minister and the Minister of Electricity with the ministry’s staff.”
He added that “the Prime Minister focused in his continuous meetings on the issue of collecting electricity fees, controlling loads, and regulating violations on the distribution networks in agricultural and informal areas in a systematic manner, while reviewing the hours of electricity supply and energy returns, whether produced, consumed, or distributed.”
He also explained that “the amount of losses in electrical energy is large, and the ministry bears large sums of money for its production and transmission,” noting that “the Prime Minister stressed the need to take measures to limit these losses.”
He explained that “the losses that were placed on the Prime Minister’s table are divided into administrative and technical losses, where the technical losses are represented by the power transmission lines and distribution networks, and the permissible limit does not exceed 6%, while the size of the losses currently reaches more than 58%, which is energy supplied to consumers but is not collected, not controlled, not officially regulated, and not collected, and is called administrative losses.”
He also pointed out that “administrative losses are energy provided to subscribers and consumers that is not collected and not regulated,” stressing that “the Prime Minister directed the need to control the loads and these large violations and regulate them systematically, install meters for subscribers of all categories, collect energy values and maximize collection resources.” He continued that “maximizing resources is used to purchase critical materials and electrical grid equipment,” noting that “the Prime Minister was briefed on the Ministry’s plan with progressive goals, including maximizing collection resources and reducing the large losses present in the electrical grid.”
