Al-Maalomah/Anbar –
A leader in the Azm Alliance, Mohammed al-Fahdawi, revealed today, Thursday, that there is near-unanimity on nominating the head of the Azm Alliance, Muthanna al-Samarrai, for the position of Speaker of Parliament after al-Halbousi’s rejection.
Al-Fahdawi told Al-Maalomah News Agency, “A Shiite-Sunni political movement has led to a near-consensus on choosing the head of the Azm Alliance, Muthanna al-Samarrai, for the position of Speaker of Parliament, in coordination with most of the Shiite blocs and parties, and after approaching the Kurds to reach a consensus on choosing al-Samarrai, after they rejected the nomination of the head of the Taqaddum Alliance, Mohammed al-Halbousi, for well-known reasons.”
He added that “the Sunni National Council is awaiting the outcome of the coordination framework talks for selecting the prime minister, following discussions regarding Nouri al-Maliki, outgoing Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, and current Interior Minister Abdul Amir al-Shammari. To date, the Kurdish parties have not reached an agreement on a presidential candidate, although reports indicate a near-consensus on current Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein for the position.” He further stated that “discussions on forming the central government have begun early, in an atmosphere free from previous disagreements regarding the mechanism for agreeing on the next prime minister.”
