The Iraqi Ministry of Justice announced on Sunday that it had won an international lawsuit that saved the country from paying more than $120 million to an American company.
The ministry said in a statement today that it had achieved “an important legal accomplishment after winning the lawsuit filed by the American company (Y-Oak) before the courts in the United States, in which it demanded large sums of money from the government of the Republic of Iraq and the Ministry of Defense in connection with a previous contract.”
The company had filed its lawsuit to claim the amount of US$24 million in addition to late payment interest, before the US courts issued a preliminary ruling on November 15, 2019 obligating the Iraqi side to pay the amount of US$120,338,399.17, in addition to US$10,909 for each day of delay after September 10, 2019.
The Iraqi Ministry of Justice explained that “through continuous legal efforts, the lawyers of the Iraqi side submitted an appeal against the ruling, which resulted in the reversal of the decision issued in favor of the company, and the continuation of litigation procedures, including referring the file to the US Attorney General.”
According to the statement, “In a decisive development, a final decision was issued on 9/16/2025 rejecting the claims of the company (Y-Oak) in their entirety and canceling the previous ruling issued against Iraq.”
The Iraqi Ministry of Justice stated in its statement that “this decision is a prominent legal victory that reflects the efficiency of the Ministry of Justice’s international legal follow-up, and contributed directly to sparing the Iraqi government the payment of an amount close to 120 million US dollars, which enhances the protection of public funds and confirms the effectiveness of legal defense of the state’s interests in international judicial forums.”
