The Iraqi Ministry of Transport announced on Friday that the “five essential projects” within the Grand Faw Port project will be completed by the end of this year, stressing that the government will continue to follow up on the details of the project directly due to its strategic importance to Iraq and the region.

The ministry spokesman, Maitham Al-Safi, told Shafaq News Agency that the government recently held a meeting of the Higher Committee for the Development Project to review progress rates and discuss the latest field developments, noting that work is proceeding according to the established timelines.

Al-Safi pointed out that one of the most prominent recent developments is the opening of the road linking to the Grand Faw Port, which was in the detailed design stage, explaining that the completion rate of the land route reached 68%, while the cumulative detailed designs reached 83%, with work on the railway line continuing at an advanced stage.

He explained that the Grand Faw Port project is witnessing significant progress in the implementation of the basic projects, including the five berths, the connecting road and the navigation channel, stressing that work on them is proceeding at an increasing pace.

Regarding the “container yard,” Al-Safi confirmed that it has reached “advanced completion rates and is about to be handed over,” while the submerged tunnel has exceeded 80% completion, and it is one of the most important construction elements that will enhance the future movement of the port.

He added that the end of this year will witness the “completion of the five basic projects” within the Grand Faw Port project, which will contribute to moving to more expansive stages in infrastructure.

Al-Safi concluded that the ministry is working on developing a comprehensive future vision for the port, which will be one of the most important ports in the Middle East and a pivotal center in the development road project.

The Grand Faw Port is a strategic project in the far south of Iraq, located on the Faw Peninsula in Basra Governorate. It aims to transform the country into a regional trade hub by linking it to global transport networks. The foundation stone for this project was laid on April 5, 2010.

The project costs approximately $4.6 billion, covers an area of 54 square kilometers, and the port is expected to have depths of 19 meters to accommodate the largest commercial vessels.

Its handling capacity is also expected to reach 99 million tons per year, making it one of the largest ports in the Arabian Gulf and the tenth largest in the world.

In 2024, the concrete wall for the docks was completed, the foundations were prepared, and work began on the container yard, where work is proceeding in parallel, with a focus on completing the last five projects simultaneously.

During the current year, progress was made in completing the submerged tunnel, as most of its parts were installed, the pillars were fixed and submerged, which is one of the vital projects in the Grand Faw Port.

The Grand Faw Port is expected to bring about a major transformation in regional and international trade by connecting Iraq to global transport networks and facilitating the movement of goods between East and West.
