The framework has the final say and Savaya is threatening - either a government with American influence or face the consequencesThe latest statement by US envoy to Iraq,
Mark Savaya, carries a clear and unambiguous threat. He seeks to form a government with American backing to serve Washington’s interests, or else plunge Iraq into political turmoil, economic decline, and international isolation. Despite these threats, the Coordination Framework continues its discussions to select the new prime minister, remaining unaffected by American interference and Washington’s attempts to impose its policies on Baghdad for the next phase.
Political analyst Ibrahim al-Sarraj told Al-Maalomah, “The attempts by Trump’s envoy, Mark Savaya, to interfere in internal affairs, especially regarding government formation, will not succeed. The Coordination Framework is committed to following constitutional procedures and awaits the Federal Court’s ratification of the election results. This will provide a strong impetus for political forces to proceed with selecting the next prime minister.” He added, “The formation of the government rests with the Coordination Framework, and the talk about Savaya’s interference represents attempts to amplify the importance of unwelcome foreign interventions, particularly American ones, which contradict the election results.”
For his part, former MP Hassan Fad’am told Al-Maalomah that “Iraq is not accustomed to such high levels of foreign, or specifically American, interference, where a prime ministerial candidate is rejected or Washington attempts to impose its will on the formation of the government. While the American administration expresses its views on certain figures, the final decision regarding the prime minister for the next phase rests with the Iraqi people.” He added that “the American side seeks to protect its interests in Iraq, ensure their implementation, and prevent any obstruction. It is pushing for a prime minister who will safeguard its interests, companies, and projects within Iraq.”
Mark Savaya’s recent statement carried a clear threat and hinted at the shape of the next government and the party or individual likely to assume the premiership. A statement received by Al-Maalomah read, “Iraq is once again facing a critical juncture… No country can succeed while armed groups compete with the state and undermine its authority.”
He claimed that “over the past three years, Iraq has proven that true stability is possible when the government adopts a realistic and balanced approach that keeps the country out of regional conflicts and refocuses on national priorities. This emerging path must not be derailed. Consolidating stability requires responsible leadership and unity of purpose. Today, the responsibility lies squarely with political and religious leaders. The decisions they make in the coming phase will determine whether Iraq moves toward sovereignty and strength or slides back into disintegration and decline.”
Using a carrot-and-stick approach, Savaya stated: “A unified and rational choice will send a clear and unequivocal message to the United States and the international community that Iraq is ready to take its rightful place as a stable and respected nation in the new Middle East. The alternative is also well known: economic decline, political turmoil, and international isolation.”
