Anbar Alliance leader Mohammed al-Fahdawi revealed on Sunday that the Sunni National Council does not object to Nouri al-Maliki assuming the position of Prime Minister in the new government.
Al-Fahdawi told the Information Agency that “political activity between Shiite and Sunni forces has reached an advanced stage regarding the selection of the new Prime Minister,” noting that “there is a preliminary consensus that there is no objection to al-Maliki assuming the position, with discussions underway with the Kurdish blocs to reach a full agreement.”
He added that “dialogues regarding the formation of the central government began early in an atmosphere free from previous disagreements about the mechanism for agreeing on the Prime Minister’s position,” indicating that former Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani is out of the electoral race.
Al-Fahdawi pointed out that “the proposal of al-Maliki’s name will be discussed among the other political parties and alliances to formulate a unified position that will lead to expediting the formation of the new government according to the established timetable.”
