The coordinating framework, which brings together Shiite political forces, intends to hold an expanded meeting tomorrow, Monday, to discuss the selection of the next prime minister and the latest results of dialogues with political forces regarding the formation of the new government.
An official source within the framework told Shafaq News Agency that “the framework will discuss the latest work of the committee responsible for selecting the next prime minister, and during the meeting the final touches will be put on the specifications and names chosen for this position, without specifying the name during the meeting.”
The source added that “the coordination framework needs more time for its leadership to agree on a single figure for the position of the new prime minister, but the meeting expected tomorrow, Monday, will be to put the final touches on all the criteria, specifications and final names nominated for the position, so that one of them can be chosen within a maximum period of the middle of next month.”
The committee tasked with evaluating candidates for the position of Prime Minister, under the Coordination Framework, found on Saturday that the nominated individuals came from various parliamentary blocs, multiple parties, and some independent candidates, but that most of them did not meet the criteria for competing for the position of Prime Minister, according to the committee.
Several prominent new candidates have joined the shortlist, most notably caretaker Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, State of Law Coalition leader Nouri al-Maliki, and Accountability and Justice Commission chief Bassem al-Badri, in addition to Basra Governor Asaad al-Eidani, who recently entered the race, with a strong likelihood that Intelligence Service chief Hamid al-Shatri will be excluded.
The coordinating framework had previously specified the conditions and criteria that must be met by candidates for the position of head of the new government, most notably that he must not be the leader of a political bloc.
Then he reversed course and eased it, which opened the door for most of the framework’s forces to put forward their candidates for the position, according to what a political source told Shafaq News Agency at the time.
The source explained that “the previous conditions included (that the candidate should not have previously been nominated for the position or held it previously, and should not have a party or a separate bloc), but the forces of the Coordination Framework agreed that the next Prime Minister should not have any files, lawsuits or suspicions of corruption, and if there are files on him, he will be rejected and prevented from running for the position.”
It is worth noting that the Independent High Electoral Commission in Iraq announced on November 17, 2025, the final results of the parliamentary elections, revealing that the Development and Reconstruction Coalition, led by outgoing Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, won 46 seats.
