A leading source within the Sovereignty Alliance revealed on Saturday the most prominent names being considered for the position of Speaker of Parliament in the upcoming session, confirming that Mohammed al-Halbousi, head of the Progress Party, is no longer a candidate.
The source told the Information Agency that “the political council, which includes Sunni leaders, rejected the proposal to rotate the leadership positions during its founding meeting and decided to open the door to new names for the position of Speaker of Parliament.”
The source, who preferred to remain anonymous, added that “the meeting determined a preliminary list of candidates, which did not include Mohammed al-Halbousi.”
He indicated that the most prominent names being considered include: Thabit al-Abbasi, Muthanna al-Samarrai, Salem al-Issawi, and Mohammed Tamim, in addition to other figures still under discussion within the political council.
