Iraq was spared from the new bans announced by US President Donald Trump regarding the prevention of citizens of what he called “Third World countries” from entering the United States, despite the expansion of the list to include 19 countries and the issuance of a subsequent decision by the US Immigration Agency to suspend, in whole or in part, the entry of citizens of these countries.
According to a statement from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the countries subject to the full or partial ban include Libya, Sudan, Yemen, Somalia, Iran, Afghanistan, Burma, Burundi, Chad, Cuba, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela, as reported by Reuters.
In a separate statement, the US Immigration Agency announced a complete suspension of entry for citizens of 12 countries, including Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, Sudan and Yemen, along with a partial suspension for citizens of 7 other countries, including Cuba, Venezuela and Turkmenistan.
This escalation comes after a shooting incident carried out by an Afghan immigrant near the White House that killed a member of the National Guard, prompting Trump to announce that his administration would “permanently suspend immigration from all Third World countries.”
Later, UN agencies responded to Trump’s pledge to ban immigration from “Third World” countries in the wake of the attack near the White House, urging Washington to continue allowing asylum seekers to enter the country.
