Shafaq News – Baghdad
On Saturday, Mohammed Abbas, spokesman for the Sovereignty Alliance, revealed that there are some secret names being discussed behind the scenes as potential candidates for the presidency of the Iraqi parliament.
Abbas told Shafaq News Agency that “the meetings within the National Political Council aim to unify visions and reach common understandings in order to guarantee the entitlements of the Sunni component in senior positions, ministries and the budget for the governorates, in addition to achieving the principle of partnership and balance in state institutions.”
He added that “choosing a person for the position of Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament represents the first and greatest entitlement for the Sunni component, and this has not been decided yet,” noting that “there is an agreement within the National Political Council stipulating that the person who will assume the presidency of the Council must be nominated and emanating exclusively from this Council, and no dealings will be made with any name that is put forward individually.”
Abbas pointed out that “political consensus within the National Council will resolve many issues,” indicating that “there are names being considered behind the scenes, but no agreement has yet been reached on which direction to take.”
He continued, saying that “the Sunni bloc is waiting for the political forces in the Shiite bloc to reach a consensus on nominating the most suitable person for the position of Prime Minister, and is also waiting for the Kurdish bloc to agree on a candidate for the position of President of the Republic.”
Abbas explained that “the National Political Council is not late in deciding on the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives, and that there is enough time to choose the right person,” stressing “working to make the council stand and be effective throughout the next four years.”
Prior to that, Jamal al-Karbouli, leader of the Al-Hal Party, hinted at a new figure assuming the presidency of the Iraqi parliament, as al-Karbouli said, in a post he published on the “X” platform, that “the gavel of parliament will be in a hand that has never held it before.”
The Sunni alliances and parties that won the elections announced last Sunday the establishment of the “National Political Council”.
This came during an expanded meeting held at the initiative and invitation of the head of the Sovereignty Alliance, Khamis al-Khanjar, in Baghdad, with the aim of unifying visions and positions regarding major national issues and strengthening joint work between political leaders and blocs, according to a statement issued at the time.
According to the final election results, Sunni forces won 77 seats, making the reshaping of alliances a crucial factor in the negotiations to form the next government.
