A leader in the Coordination Framework and head of the “Design” coalition, Amer Al-Fayez, confirmed on Monday that the final candidate for the upcoming government will be decided after the ratification of the legislative election results, while an informed source stated that easing the conditions previously set by the Framework as a criterion for choosing the prime minister has opened the door for political forces to present their candidates.
Al-Fayez told Shafaq News Agency that “the announcement of the final candidate for the premiership will be after the judiciary approves the election results, and anyone who meets the conditions set by the coordination framework has the right to run and compete for the position.”
Regarding the nomination by the Islamic Dawa Party of its Secretary-General Nouri al-Maliki for the presidency of the new government, al-Fayez explained: “There is nothing preventing al-Maliki from running for the position, and he may put forward another candidate as an alternative to him to win the position. We are waiting for what the committee concerned with studying the candidates’ CVs will present.”
In addition, a source within the coordination framework stated that “easing the restrictions on candidacy for the position of Prime Minister has opened the door for most of the framework’s forces to submit their candidates for the position.”
The source told Shafaq News Agency that “the previous conditions included (that the candidate should not have previously been nominated for the position or held it previously, and should not have a party or a separate bloc), but the forces of the Coordination Framework agreed that the next Prime Minister should not have any files, lawsuits or suspicions of corruption, and if there are files on him, he will be rejected and prevented from running for the position.”
The source confirmed that “the competition is mainly led by caretaker Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, State of Law Coalition leader Nouri al-Maliki, and Intelligence Service chief Hamid al-Shatri, in addition to others.”
Last week, the Coordination Framework announced the formation of two committees. The first committee is concerned with forming the government and includes Ammar al-Hakim, Humam Hamoudi, and Abdul-Sada al-Fariji. The second committee is concerned with negotiating with political parties and includes Nouri al-Maliki, Hadi al-Amiri, Faleh al-Fayyad, and Mohsen al-Mandalawi.
The committee – which interviews candidates for the next Iraqi government presidency – affiliated with the coordination framework, received 5 CVs from candidates for the position last Saturday.
The names are State of Law leader Nouri al-Maliki, caretaker Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, intelligence chief Hamid al-Shatri, former Minister of Youth and Sports Abdul Hussein Abtan, and Accountability and Justice Commission chief Bassem al-Badri, according to a source within the organization who spoke to Shafaq News Agency.
The Shura Council of the Islamic Dawa Party decided on Saturday to nominate the party’s Secretary-General, Nouri al-Maliki, for the premiership in the next Iraqi government. The party stated in a brief statement today that the council made this decision unanimously.
