MP Kazem Attia called on the next government on Monday to give the national industry file top priority and develop it in line with the needs of the Iraqi market, stressing that the current ministry has not been up to the required level in performing its duties.

Attia told Al-Maalomah News Agency that “national industry is a fundamental pillar in supporting the economy and reducing dependence on imports,” indicating that “the current ministry has not provided what is required of it and has not achieved any tangible accomplishments in this vital sector.”

He added that “the next government is required to develop strategic plans to advance the national industry and provide the necessary support to local factories and plants.”

Attia stressed that “strengthening this sector will create ample job opportunities and contribute to achieving self-sufficiency.”

Earlier, Yasser al-Husseini, Vice Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Economy and Investment, accused the government of obstructing the revival of the public industrial sector due to a “failed” economic vision. He pointed to widespread corruption and waste of public funds in the sale and leasing of factories and lands belonging to the Ministry of Industry.
