Political analyst Ibrahim al-Sarraj suggested on Sunday that Nouri al-Maliki, head of the State of Law Coalition, is the most likely candidate to win the nomination of the Coordination Framework for the position of Prime Minister of the next government, noting that the Framework’s support would be in his favor if the competition were limited to him and current Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.
Al-Sarraj told Al-Maalouma News Agency that “the majority of the forces within the Coordination Framework have recorded a number of observations on Al-Sudani’s performance during his tenure as head of government, particularly his departure from some of the terms of the agreement concluded with the Framework when he was appointed, which led to a decline in his chances of receiving support from those forces.”
He added that “the announcement by the Shura Council of the Dawa Party of nominating Nouri al-Maliki unilaterally for the premiership came after he received a green light from most of the forces within the Coordination Framework,” stressing that “the balance of support within the framework is currently strongly in favor of al-Maliki at the expense of al-Sudani.”
Al-Sarraj noted that “the Kurdish and Sunni political forces have declared their non-interference in the framework agreement regarding the selection of the prime ministerial candidate, which will facilitate the process of deciding on the name of the next prime minister.”
