The Facebook page of the Islamic Dawa Party republished on Saturday evening the announcement nominating the party’s Secretary-General, Nouri al-Maliki, for the next government, hours after deleting the post, sparking widespread controversy about the reasons.

The Islamic Dawa Party announced on Saturday afternoon that the party’s Shura Council had decided to nominate the Secretary-General of the Dawa Party, Nouri al-Maliki, for the position of Prime Minister in the next Iraqi government.

The party stated in a brief statement today that the council made this decision unanimously.

But hours later, this statement was deleted from the party’s official platforms, without any explanation as to the reasons for the deletion, and it was also republished again hours later.

Al-Maliki’s nomination comes as he arrives in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region, to discuss the formation of the new Iraqi government following the parliamentary elections held on November 11.

A source revealed on Thursday the three most prominent candidates for the position of Prime Minister, while indicating that next week will witness movement among all political forces to name the three presidencies.

The source pointed out that there are three candidates, one of whom will be named through voting within the coordinating framework that brings together the ruling Shiite political forces in Iraq. They are the outgoing Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, the head of the State of Law Coalition Nouri al-Maliki, and the head of the intelligence service Hamid al-Shatri.
