On Friday, an official from the Federal Integrity Commission informed representatives of the United Nations Development Programme of the need to adapt the initiative of international organizations to Iraqi laws, procedures, and administrative contexts that regulate the work of state institutions and define their responsibilities.

A statement issued by the commission and reported by Shafaq News Agency said that it discussed “with the United Nations Development Programme ways to coordinate bilateral and international efforts in the field of recovering smuggled funds and handing over those wanted in corruption cases.”

The First Deputy Chairman of the Commission, Mazhar Al-Jubouri, affirmed during a meeting held at the Commission’s headquarters with the Director of the Justice Initiatives Support Project in the program, Yama Turabi, that “the file of recovering smuggled funds is among the important files that the Commission is striving to complete,” noting “the efforts of international organizations to encourage the conclusion of bilateral agreements between member states in the field of recovering smuggled assets.”

During the meeting, Al-Jubouri reviewed “the challenges related to the requirements of some countries in the field of recovering funds, including: the disparity in laws, and identifying the mechanisms that can be used to recover smuggled funds,” indicating that “the initiatives or projects launched by international organizations are important, but at the same time they need to be adapted to Iraqi laws and the administrative procedures and contexts that regulate the work of state institutions and define their responsibility.”

For his part, Turabi expressed “the program’s full readiness to cooperate with Iraq in the field of preventing and combating corruption, and to help build partnerships and conclude bilateral agreements related to the recovery of funds and wanted persons.”

The statement from the Authority also noted that “the nature of the challenges and problems facing international organizations in assisting member states to bring viewpoints closer and coordinate efforts to remove procedural obstacles between them, build capacities in the field of combating corruption, and mobilize efforts to address this serious scourge” was reviewed.

The Federal Integrity Commission is working on a number of files, foremost among them the file of recovering smuggled funds, and it is concluding bilateral agreements with several foreign countries and organizations concerned with this file.

The authority has managed to recover large sums of smuggled funds over the past years, and its efforts in this regard continue.
