Malikis coalition makes its decision - No second term for SudaniShafaq News – Baghdad
The State of Law Coalition, led by Nouri al-Maliki, revealed on Tuesday evening that there is explicit opposition to extending the term of caretaker Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani by several forces within the coordination framework, stressing that these forces reject renewing al-Sudani’s term and prefer another candidate .

Coalition leader Alaa al-Haddadi told Shafaq News Agency that there is explicit opposition to extending al-Sudani’s term by several forces within the framework, namely Asa’ib Ahl al-Haq, Rights and Services, State of Law, and the Sadiqun bloc, according to him .

Al-Haddadi added, “Every bloc within the framework has the ambition to have its candidate be the Prime Minister, but the general context within the framework is based on consultation and deliberation, not on imposing wills .”

He explained that an objection from a key party within the framework to any candidate “may lead to his exclusion, because the most important goal is to maintain the unity of the framework and its political acceptability, and to avoid putting forward a controversial figure .”

Al-Haddadi pointed out that the coordination framework does not rely in its internal mechanism on the size of parliamentary seats, explaining that “the framework’s table is round, without a president, and its decision is one, and the selection criterion depends on who can convince and present stronger political data, and not on who has a larger number of deputies .”

Although the current Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani – whose Reconstruction and Development Alliance topped the results of the last elections with 45 seats – is strongly putting himself forward for a second term, al-Haddadi confirms that “he will not proceed easily within the framework .”

Political sources had previously confirmed to Shafaq News Agency that the competition for the premiership is currently limited to al-Sudani and the head of the intelligence service, Hamid al-Shatri, from among 15 candidates who were discussed within the framework, with al-Sudani being favored if he remains within the framework, given the regional and international support he enjoys .

Al-Haddadi explained that the State of Law Coalition – the second largest list in the framework after Al-Sudani with 30 seats – has only one candidate for the premiership, Nouri Al-Maliki, but he reiterated that “the issue is not decided by electoral weights, but rather by political influence, a unified decision, and a comprehensive consensus among all the forces of the framework .”

Al-Haddadi’s statements come amid the accelerating movement within the coordination framework, which announced on Monday evening the formation of the “largest parliamentary bloc” less than an hour after the Independent High Electoral Commission announced the results of the general and special elections .

The framework also decided in its meeting to form two leadership committees, the first to discuss national entitlements and develop a unified vision for managing the next phase, and the second to interview candidates for the premiership according to “professional and national ” criteria.
