Water resources expert Tahseen Al-Moussawi confirmed on Sunday that the heavy rains that fell on Saturday only contributed to raising the water storage in the dams by an amount of 30 cubic centimeters, explaining that most of the rain fell behind the dams, which prevented us from benefiting from it, as a result of poor planning and the failure to establish new artificial dams in the central and southern regions.
Al-Moussawi told Al-Maalouma News Agency that “weak government planning over decades has led to the waste of large quantities of rainwater during the rainy seasons.”
He added that “the heavy rains that the country witnessed yesterday contributed to a limited increase in the water reservoir, not exceeding 30 cm, because the majority of the rain fell outside the dams,” stressing that “Iraq needs to establish at least 40 artificial dams in the central and southern regions to ensure the investment of every drop of rain,” calling on the government to “provide the necessary financial allocations, considering that this file is of an existential nature.”
Baghdad and several other provinces experienced heavy rainfall in the past few hours, while weather forecasts indicate that the low-pressure system will continue to affect the region for the next two days.
