Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani affirmed on Saturday that the Kurdistan Democratic Party does not place a “veto” on any political party, stressing that the closest to the party and to the Kurdistan Region is the one that fully adheres to the articles of the constitution.
Barzani’s headquarters said in a statement, received by Shafaq News Agency, that Masoud Barzani received the British Ambassador to Iraq, Irfan Siddiq, today at the Pirmam resort.
During the meeting, Ambassador Sadiq congratulated Masoud Barzani on the success of the Iraqi parliamentary elections and the great victory achieved by the Kurdistan Democratic Party, which obtained more than one million votes. He expressed his hope that the political process in Iraq would resume its course after the elections, paving the way for the formation of a federal government with the participation of all political parties.
For his part, Barzani thanked the British ambassador, noting that despite the obstacles placed before the Democratic Party, it was able, thanks to the strong confidence of the people of Kurdistan, to achieve this great accomplishment.
Barzani considered the post-election period an important stage, stressing the need for all political parties to work seriously to correct the course of governance in Iraq, implement the articles of the constitution, get closer to each other, and learn from the mistakes of the past.
He stressed that the implementation of the constitution should be the basis for any negotiations to form the next government, stressing that the Democratic Party and the regional government do not have a “veto” against any party, and that the most important thing is everyone’s belief in full federalism according to the constitution, and the commitment to implementing its provisions and issuing the necessary laws to activate its non-implemented articles, including the Federal Council Law and the Oil and Gas Law.
Barzani stressed that any party that commits to implementing the constitution will be the closest to the Democratic Party and to the Kurdistan Region.
Regarding the internal situation in the region, Barzani explained that Kurdistan had shown all possible flexibility before the Iraqi parliamentary elections, stressing that the atmosphere that preceded the elections should not continue after they ended, and that it is necessary to open the doors of dialogue to solve the problems.
In the context of Kurdish unity in Baghdad, he stressed that the basis of this unity is the existence of a common vision on the strategic issues of the region, and Baghdad’s commitment to fully implementing the constitution, especially with regard to federalism.
The meeting also addressed relations between Britain and both the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, with both sides emphasizing the importance of continuing and developing these relations in various fields.
