The submerged tunnel is in its final stages... a single piece separates Faw from Umm QasrThe Director General of the General Company for Iraqi
Ports, Farhan Al-Fartousi, confirmed on Friday that the installation of the eighth section of the submerged tunnel within the Grand Faw Port project has reached its final stages. Only one 126-meter section remains to complete the final connection between Faw and Umm Qasr.
Al-Fartousi stated in a press release received by Al-Maalomah News Agency that “work is proceeding according to schedule, and the ninth and final section will be lowered into position before the end of this month. Immediately following this, work will begin on the final closure joint, which includes installing a robust steel structure, then draining the water from the closure area, before proceeding with concrete pouring in preparation for opening the tunnel’s final gates.”
He added that “the depth above the ceiling of the tunnel sections at the deepest point is 22 meters, a depth that allows large ships to pass through without affecting navigation,” noting that “all parts of the tunnel will be covered with layers of stone fill approximately 1.75 meters high, using stones weighing up to one ton each in the central area, and others with higher protection capacity near wave-affected areas to ensure long-term stability.”
