Political expert Mohammed Al-Dhari confirmed on Thursday that the Progress Party, led by Mohammed Al-Halbousi, is the biggest loser in the recent parliamentary elections, despite topping the results in Anbar province and achieving advanced rankings in some other provinces.
Al-Dhari told Al-Maalouma News Agency that “the Progress Alliance, despite winning first place in Anbar and second place in Baghdad, lost about nine seats compared to the previous parliamentary session, including three seats in Anbar alone.”
He added that “Al-Halbousi had achieved 45 parliamentary seats in the previous elections, while in the current session he dropped to only 36 seats, despite allocating large sums of money to achieve more than 50 seats, but the results came below expectations due to the significant decline in the party’s popularity.”
He pointed out that “the Azm Alliance, led by Muthanna al-Samarrai, one of al-Halbousi’s most prominent opponents in the Sunni arena, managed to increase its seats despite the harassment and political and psychological pressure it faced from the Progressive leaders in Anbar.”
Al-Dhari concluded by saying that “a number of winners within the Progress Alliance are considering defecting from the alliance if they are not given leadership positions in the next phase.”
