On Thursday, US President’s Special Envoy to Iraq Mark Savva offered his sincere congratulations to the Iraqi people on the successful completion of the recent parliamentary elections, considering it “a fundamental step to strengthen democracy and stability in the country.”

In a statement published on his official account, Savia said, “The Iraqi people have once again demonstrated their commitment to freedom, the rule of law, and building strong state institutions,” praising “Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani and his government’s commitment to holding the elections on time and smoothly,” considering this “clear evidence that Iraq is on the path to prosperity and sovereignty.”

The US envoy affirmed that “the United States remains strongly committed to supporting Iraq’s sovereignty, reform efforts, and reducing foreign interference and armed groups,” noting that his country “looks forward to working with the Iraqi government to deepen the strategic partnership in the areas of security, energy, and development, and to contribute to building a stable and prosperous future for all Iraqis.”

On Wednesday, the Iraqi High Electoral Commission announced the preliminary results of the parliamentary elections, which saw a turnout of 56.11% to elect 329 representatives.

The results showed a lead for a coalition headed by al-Sudani, while details of the seat allocation will be announced later.

These elections, the sixth since 2003, come amid relative stability and a higher turnout than the 2021 elections, paving the way for the selection of the new prime minister.
