MP Mudhar al-Karawi confirmed on Saturday that the Iraqi Parliament can proceed with voting on the 2025 budget schedules if the government submits them after the November 11 elections.
Al-Karawi told the Information Agency, “The 2025 budget schedules can be approved by Parliament after the upcoming elections, especially since the current parliamentary term ends next January, thus providing the necessary legal cover.”
He added, “The matter hinges on the government submitting the schedules. It has not yet been decided whether the current government will submit the 2025 budget or leave it to the next government.” He noted that “all possibilities are open, and a final decision will be made after the elections and the announcement of the results.”
He explained that “the failure to receive the 2025 budget schedules has negatively impacted the work of many ministries and agencies, extending even to local governments, as some projects require funding and payments to companies and contractors.” He emphasized that “finalizing the budget remains contingent on a government decision to send the schedules, and once they arrive, Parliament will have the legal authority to proceed with voting on it.”
