Nineveh Governor Abdul Qadir al-Dakhil announced on Thursday the launch of the first flights from Mosul International Airport to the capital, Baghdad, in an event he described as “historic,” signaling the official start of domestic flights after years of suspension.

Al-Dakhil told Shafaq News Agency that “the first flight of Iraqi Airways took off from Mosul Airport after the plane coming from Baghdad landed, marking the first official domestic flight for the airport since its rehabilitation and operation.”

He added that “work is underway to complete the procedures for contracting with specialized international companies to operate international flights soon, which will restore Mosul Airport to its vital role as Nineveh’s gateway to the world,” stressing that “this achievement constitutes a long-awaited dream for the people of Mosul, who followed the stages of reconstruction until the actual launch was achieved today.”

In addition, the Assistant Director General and Acting Director of the General Company for Air Navigation Services, Ahmed Emad Ahmed, confirmed that the Air Traffic Management staff supervised all stages of the first flight from Baghdad to Mosul International Airport with high accuracy and professionalism, starting from the departure of the plane, through guidance and communication, until the safe landing, in accordance with the air safety standards adopted by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

He explained that this achievement reflects the high level of competence and discipline of the Iraqi air traffic controllers, who form the backbone of managing Iraqi airspace, along with the role of aviation communications engineers in ensuring continuous communication between control towers, aircraft, and the air traffic control center to ensure the highest levels of safety.
