Al-Maalomah/Anbar –
Mohammed al-Dhari, a leader in the United Anbar Alliance, warned on Sunday of the serious repercussions of the “water for oil” agreement signed between Iraq and Turkey, stressing that it has dire consequences for the country’s sovereignty.
In a statement to Al-Maalomah News Agency, al-Dhari said, “The agreement grants Turkey complete control over Iraq’s water resources and their management, in addition to the construction and rehabilitation of dams by Turkish companies, without the central government having any effective role other than oversight.”
He added, “The government of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has handed over Iraq’s water resources to Turkey through one of the most dangerous agreements related to the water crisis.” He explained that “the agreement allows Turkish companies to manage, modernize, and build Iraqi water infrastructure to ensure the efficient and sustainable use of water resources, with a financing system based on oil sales in exchange for Turkish water releases into the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.”
Al-Dhari emphasized that “the agreement places the entire management of the water file in Turkey’s hands, with the central government’s role limited to mere monitoring.”
