Government spokesman Bassem Al-Awadi said in a press statement, “There is no truth to the claim that Iraq will waive its debts in exchange for signing the water agreement with Türkiye.”

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani oversaw the signing ceremony on Sunday of the executive mechanism for the framework cooperation agreement with Turkey in the field of water, between Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan, who arrived in Baghdad this morning.

Reuters quoted a Turkish official as saying: “Iraq signed an agreement with Turkey on Sunday that will allow the proceeds from oil sales to be used to finance water infrastructure projects to be implemented by Turkish companies.”

The Turkish official said: “The Iraqi government will form a committee for water infrastructure projects and will invite Turkish companies to submit their bids, with these projects to be financed through the proceeds from oil sales that Iraq exports to Turkey.”
