On Sunday, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan signed the executive mechanism for the framework cooperation agreement between the two countries in the field of water, under the auspices of Federal Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.

Al-Sudani confirmed in a statement from his office, which was received by Shafaq News Agency, that the agreement will be one of the sustainable solutions to the water crisis in Iraq, through a package of large joint projects that will be implemented in the water sector, to confront and manage the water scarcity crisis.

He pointed to the importance of following up on the implementation of the outcomes agreed upon during the Turkish President’s visit to Baghdad last year, noting that the water crisis is a global crisis, and that Iraq is one of the countries affected by it.

Al-Sudani explained that the financing mechanism agreement will strengthen bilateral relations with Türkiye and contribute to their growth in various fields, in a way that achieves the common interests of the two friendly countries.

For his part, the Turkish minister conveyed to the Sudanese the greetings of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and praised the current government’s steps in strengthening bilateral relations, which resulted in the signing of several agreements and memoranda of understanding in various sectors and fields, according to the statement.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, during a press conference he held with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan, who arrived in Baghdad on Sunday, described the document on managing the water file between the two countries as the first of its kind in the history of bilateral relations.

The two ministers noted that this step comes after a series of meetings and extensive discussions that addressed water cooperation and related infrastructure projects, with the aim of the sustainable use of water resources and achieving the interests of both countries.
