On Saturday, Kurdish leader and head of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Masoud Barzani, expressed his hope that the upcoming elections would result in an understanding between the sincere parties to “save Iraq from its crises.”
Barzani said in a speech he delivered during his meeting today with a number of religious figures in Duhok Governorate, “The elections are a very important process in which the people decide their fate, and we want our people to be free in their choice and to exercise their democratic right with complete freedom.”
He added that “the Kurdistan Democratic Party does not view elections as a means to obtain positions, but rather seeks to demonstrate its strength and popular support in order to defend the rights of the people of Kurdistan and Iraq.”
Barzani stressed that “after 2003 we sought to build a new Iraq, and we wrote a permanent constitution that addressed most of the issues, and we believed that if the constitution had been actually implemented, Iraq would have overcome most of its crises, but unfortunately that did not happen.”
