Writer and journalist Saif Al-Hamdani confirmed on Tuesday that the United States is seeking to send a clear political message that its presence in Iraq will not remain limited to the security and military aspects, but will extend to include economic influence, noting that the appointment of a new US envoy in Baghdad reflects the ongoing state of anxiety and lack of trust between Washington and the Iraqi government.
Al-Hamdani said in a statement to Al-Maalouma Agency, “The United States is trying to consolidate its presence in Iraq in a different way this time, through economic and investment tools, in addition to its security and military influence,” adding that “the appointment of a special envoy at this time comes within the framework of Washington’s desire to readjust the relationship with Baghdad according to its own interests.”
He added that “America remains wary of successive Iraqi governments despite the passage of several electoral cycles, and may have recently felt the need to take a preemptive step towards Iraq before the Chinese partnership expands there.” He explained that “this step expresses American concern about the expansion of Asian influence, especially in the fields of energy and infrastructure.”
Al-Hamdani pointed out that “American positions toward Iraq are vacillating and unstable, as Washington cannot be trusted or its policies predicted, as its decisions are often subject to internal calculations and shifting interests.” He noted that “the appointment of a special envoy does not indicate genuine trust, but rather reflects an attempt to more closely monitor the Iraqi government’s orientations and regional movements.”
Al-Hamdani’s statements come at a time when Iraqi-American relations are experiencing a period of political ambiguity, amid fears that recent diplomatic moves could turn into a means to reimpose American influence through the economic gateway after its failure in the security sphere.
