Political analyst Ibrahim Al-Sarraj warned on Thursday of the potential recurrence of the political crises that accompanied the previous elections. This comes against the backdrop of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani’s efforts to renew his term for a second term, despite the rejection of this approach by some within the Coordination Framework.
Al-Sarraj told Al-Maalouma that “Al-Sudani’s insistence on continuing as prime minister could be a major cause of a new political crisis, especially given the lack of consensus among political forces regarding the renewal of his term.”
He pointed out that “Al-Sudani’s desire to remain in office does not enjoy broad political consensus, given the presence of forces that refuse to grant him a new opportunity to head the government,” explaining that “this approach could spark political controversy in the coming period.”
He added, “There is regional and international support for Al-Sudani, especially from some Western and Gulf countries, in addition to internal political parties that support his continued presence in exchange for what were described as concessions offered to them, such as the release of a number of terrorists and understandings reached with Erbil regarding contentious issues,” stressing that “all of this information comes in the context of strengthening Al-Sudani’s chances of winning a second term.”
