The Iraqi Parliament’s Agriculture, Water and Marshlands Committee revealed on Tuesday that the “water crisis” will be postponed until after the parliamentary elections scheduled for November 11.
Committee member Thaer Makhif al-Jubouri told Shafaq News Agency, “The water crisis will continue after the parliamentary elections scheduled for next month, and may be postponed until the next stage, i.e. after the formation of the government. Despite the great efforts exerted by the government and relevant parties, they have not effectively resolved the crisis.”
According to Al-Jubouri’s reading of the current situation, “the crisis will remain until the next government is formed.”
Iraq faces a severe water crisis resulting from declining rainfall, the impact of climate change, and the reduced flow of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers due to Turkish and Iranian dams. This has led to a sharp decline in water supplies and threatened food and human security. This requires strategic solutions at the level of regional cooperation, inland water management, and the development of irrigation technologies.
Earlier today, the Iraqi Green Observatory confirmed the worsening water crisis in the southern provinces despite mild weather, denying reports of increased discharges from Türkiye into the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.
